Denise and Rob Lombardi quit their jobs and moved to Hurleyville in upstate New York to be closer to their son Rj, who has autism and lives at The Center for Discovery. The centre is a nationally acclaimed non-profit provider of residential, medical, clinical and special education programmes for people with complex conditions.

The couple tries to spend time with their 18-year-old son every weekend, even if they're busy running their store. They indulged his cravings and went on a drive together. They tickled him and sang Sesame Street songs to him.

Before they say goodbye to Rj at the centre, they always go through the days of the week with him so he knows they'll be back next weekend. "Do you know how much I love you," Denise asked Rj. "To the moon and back."
